we have rented this house for a few weeks a year for many years. Its location is superb, right on the water, with a safe beach for kids and a bluff from which you can watch the boats on the Sound, wildlife, and ever-changing light. It's fully furnished and has the charm of being a real family home with real personality and real history, not just a shell for renters. We love its cabin-like interior and the homey vibe. It's not fancy, it's comfortable, which is exactly what we want, perfect for restoring the soul.

Dirty, very smelly, very dated. Uncomfortable beds- very old mattresses. The wall to wall carpeting as well as all the upholstered furniture smells like wet dog and/or urine in some rooms. The walkway to the private beach cove was blocked off, thus rendering the only perk of this property inaccessible. Would not recommend this property to anyone.

The interior of the cottage is EXACTLY as its shown on the photos. It's well equipped and extremely clean and the decor/ambience is exactly as described.
The location is just unbeatable. Right on the sound, quiet, secluded ( yes its little way off the main road) with breathtaking views and overlooking a beautiful cove. It was a joy just to sit on out on the deck and take it all in every day. We saw Bald Eagles and deer every day and every evening a family of sea otters would make its way home as we watched. The place is just magical.

Although this home enjoys a perfect location, with views of Mt. Baker across the water, it is desperately in need of attention. Toilets are sluggish and easily clogged. Wi-Fi is very slow, even for email. Wood stove in living area cannot be used. Beach access has been marked with yellow caution tape. Roof is covered with moss, and won't last many more seasons. Driveway requires an SUV, preferably one with 4WD, but not too wide!

The house sits on the rocky Orcas Island shore. The view, the quiet, the access to the private beach and the water, and the amenities are all perfect. It is furnished circa 1960 and the story of the owners is told with the pictures and certificates that line the walls. The book collection is amazing. The kitchen is very well stocked. If you like peace and quiet, clean and comfortable, this is your place.

We had a great time at the lovely and secluded Karemar Cove house. We particularly liked walking down to the little cove and exploring the beach. The house was cozy and provided plenty of sleeping room.

Thank you for this wonderful review and we are so happy you had a nice time at the home. It is wonderful for it's seclusion and the beach nearby. We hope to see you again for another visit here in the San Juan Islands.

Our stay at Karemar Cove was relaxing. The house was exactly as described in the listing. Huge for only 2 people and 1 dog. The furnishings and art really showed that a family lived here, not just a bare/boring house.

Parking was easy, and the dirt road was no problem driving with my SUV.
We weren't able to open the back sliding door (stuck shut?), although views from inside were fine. The master bedroom looks directly out to the water - facing east for sunrise.

The bathrooms and kitchen were well appointed. All the blankets, towels, utensils, pots, and accessories required for an extended weekend. We cooked breakfast and dinner at the house each day - had everything we needed and more.

The internet was slow, as expected for a cottage this remote. The water tasted perfect. The electric heat was plenty warm, even though it was near freezing temps outside each night.

The walk down to the private beach on the Karemar Cove was nice. There is also a rocky point just behind the house with excellent views. We saw seals, birds, and fish (no whales this trip).

Overall a great trip in a nice cottage.

We love coming to Karemar Cove for so many reasons: its view to the east across East Sound to Obstruction, Blakely, and Cypress Islands, plus (if the cloud gods permit) Mt. Baker; its privacy--no visible neighbors; its bluff (not safe for small children), its beach (safe access); and its homey feeling. It's full of family photographs and mementos, so we feel like part of the family. It's not new and fancy; it's solid and comfortable. It's a great home base for walking, running, bicycling, sightseeing, or just spending the day loafing with a good book.

If you are looking for a 5 star resort with room service keep looking, this is like grandpa’s lake cabin. Taking turns doing the dishes, cooking and enjoying the view from the deck. All essential to live are available and worked with no issues, access to the beach (need some thing more then flip flops do to slope/terrain), and did I mention the daily view from the deck..... I think I could of just sat there all day listening to the water, the sun, and tranquility of the area. Don’t expect to build sand castle on the beach cove, mostlly pebbles or rocky depending on tide but great for evening fires. Wildlife in area from deer, seals or otters along beach and got some great photos. Cell phone service sketchy, internet WiFi is sufficient to get the kids off the couch and to the beach to use their imagination. If other family is coming just have them walk onto ferry and pick them up do to reservation are required for the ride. Inter-island ferry boat is free so trips to the other islands provide a great day trip excursion. This place is off the beat and path which made it exceptional if you want to relax with no distraction.

This home is perfect for those who want a place tucked away. The dog kennel made our stay very comfortable as we didnt have to worry about our pooches when we went out. There was even a pack of pasta and marinara sauce awaiting when we arrived which saved us from starvation as we rolled in later than anticipated.

I could not have found a better place to spend my 30th birthday with my family. The property is exactly as described but better.
I felt like I was back at my grandma's house and I loved it. The view from this property is breathtaking. We had a truly memorable experience at this home and will be returning in the future.

Renting through Vacation Ventures really was the icing on the cake to this trip. We arrived later than expected to the island and were navigating in the dark with no GPS signal in the rain. It was getting stressful until I called the rental company and someone immediately picked up and was able to navigate us to the property. Every email I have sent has gotten a response within 10 minutes and been nothing short of helpful. Every single person I have spoken with has been remarkable. Truly exceptional customer service. I will always do business with this company and recommend them. Thank you.

Manager's Response

Dear Guest - thank you so much for this review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay! It was quite a period of rain/storms when you arrived and we're so glad you found Karemar Cove cozy during your stay. We do hope you return and let us know how to help make your next visit the best it can be! Best Regards, General Manager

We've returned to Karemar Cove many times. We love its character as a real family home, with a real family's history on display. We love the warm wood interiors and the view of East Sound from the deck. But most of all we love the privacy: watching sunrises from the bluff below the house; sitting on the private beach; looking at the Milky Way on clear nights, cozying up to a good book in the evenings.

Karemar Cove is excellent for families. Our kids were 12 and 8 when we first came, and they had a lot of fun on that beach! The interior is very nice, but old enough so that you can be comfortable putting your feet up. We look forward to many future visits.

The view is spectacular, and the beach access to a private cove is a real treat for kids and adults. If you want to be away from it all, this is the place.
Two caveats: You probably should have an all-wheel drive vehicle- getting up the steep gravel driveway was challenging for our mini-van. Also, the dated nature of the cabin may not be to everyone's taste.

Manager's Response

Dear Guest - Thank you for choosing to stay with us on your visit to the Islands. Karemar Cove is one of our most unique properties. The views are gorgeous but the cabin as you note is more classic island, than modern or contemporary. That said many people enjoy the rustic island experience! We hope you will return again and give us an opportunity to show you other properties that may offer more of what you are looking to experience.

Best,

Comfortable cabin with decks on east and west sides and a fine view across the south end of East Sound. There's a short trail (not for the frail or unsure of foot) to an excellent beach in the Cove just to the north of the house.

There seems to be a problem with mold in the basement, and the smell comes upstairs. The carpet is very old and smells like dog. The mold should be dealt with before renting again as it could cause health problems for some. The view is mostly obstructed by trees, so it really isn't a view property. Other than that it's in a lovely wooded setting and the owner is very nice.

Manager's Response

Dear Guest, Thank you for visiting the Islands and giving us an opportunity to serve your vacation needs. We also appreciate your review and the feedback you provided. The issues you mention above have been remedied since your visit and we have had many guests since then who have fallen in love with the house! We sincerely hope you will decide to return to the Islands and if Karemar Cove isn't your perfect property, please reach out to us before booking and we will assist you in finding just the right one. You may be tempted to turn around and go back from whence you came as you're driving in to this house. It is well off the pavement, on gravel roads that could get dicey in bad weather. Even on good days, it's clear that some access rehab is needed. There are washouts and ruts that could ruin someone's day. Once there, the home itself reflects the age in which it was built. Inside, you'll find a very "eclectic" cottage with furniture and fixtures that haven't been updated since the 70's....i.e., that brown shag carpet. Step out on the back deck, and you'll realize why you picked this in the first place. Simply stunning! And, the privacy afforded makes the access challenges worthwhile. If you're looking for convenience and access to other things on the Island....proximity to Eastsound for instance...you might want to look elsewhere. However, if privacy, views, and serene solitude are part of your wish list, then this could be right for you.

We enjoyed our stay.

Manager's Response

Dear Guest, Thank you for choosing to visit the Islands and for allowing us to help you with your vacation experience. Yes Karemar Cove is one of our more unique experiences and for many an absolutely stunning step back in time to a simpler era. But yes, it all depends on what you are looking for from your vacation experience. We truly hope you will return to the Islands and give us another opportunity to find a better fit for your next adventure. We have over 80 homes we manage and so many options to choose from, all with their particular uniquely wonderful characteristics. Best Regards, General Manager

We love staying at Karemar Cove. We love the sunrise views of islands and Mt. Baker from the bluff, the safe beach access walking, running and bicycling from the house, having breakfast on the deck, talking to the owner, and relaxing and reading books. The house is older, very comfortable and well-cared for, all pine inside so it feels cabin-like, except with all the comforts of a family home. We'll be back!

We came for the amazing Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, which we loved. We did a fair bit of hiking this time, too. We didn't go to a lot of restaurants, but we can recommend Portofino's Pizza, Enzo's, Mia's, and Mijita's Mexican in Eastsound, and the Orcas Hotel in Orcas. Also the Food Co-op has a great deli, very reasonable and wholesome. Catkin Cafe in Olga is coming along, support them and check out the art gallery.

Detail: the trees do need thinning again. Just a few of the little ones, and maybe a few branches at strategic heights. They're starting to obscure the view a little too effectively.

On our arrival we were a little disappointed that the house was NOT beachside, but a few minutes walk through a wooded trail. And the picnic area that's mentioned is not only up the hill but also extremely run down and not worth a look, both are a little misleading! We had imagined picnicking and BBQing on the beach, but you can't even sit on the beach as the tide comes in. The house itself has seen better days, with both the furniture and especially the kitchen and it's utensils in need of a overhaul. In fact we had to wash the plates as they were left dirty and the trash hadn't been emptied. It does have a nice fireplace and the wood was well stocked. The house has a moldy smell to it and we had to air it out, it could also do without all the religious memorabilia in the house. I would say the best thing about this house is the view, the location is very out of the way.

While the on-line description explained that this was a cottage without frills, we nevertheless were disappointed. It was clean and generally "as advertised", but the location was remote portion of the island, trees and brush on property were a bit overgrown, lighting in the house could have been enhanced, and so forth. Might work well for some people - - just not a good fit for us.

This property is beautiful but, the inside is a little dated and dirty feeling. When we walked in it smelled like wet dog. The private cove is great and if you are not having to spend much time inside it's a great location.

My family of 4 which includes two children under four years old and my mother stayed for four nights. The location, view, size and layout of home were fantastic! The property is older and the decor reflects that(which I knew) they also allow dogs which I also knew. But the home was not just old and dated(which is what we wanted) it was dirty. The shag carpet which smelt horrible and grossed me out to watch my kids play on should be replaced with a vinyl or laminit if you allow animals. The pillow in the kids room had mold on it, the blanket and pillow had what we think was old tooth paste with hair on it! The bathroom had carpet and smelt like urine! The carpet was not secured and my husband who has a disability slipt and jolted his body on it which was very painful for him. It's a hazord and should be removed. The basement smelt of mold(very strong). The kitchen cooking utenzles seemed to be as old has the home and dirty and or rusty. The home was far too personal to be a vacation rental. I have never rented a property that seemed as if they lived there but just removed their clothing. Family photos and religious decor made you feel uncomfortable. We made the best of it because we spent so much on our only family vacation of the year, the location and view were so amazing, but paying so much for cleaning and feeling like it has never been cleaned made use feel ripped off:(. We were disappointed.

We were very happy with our stay at Karemar Cove. Joan (the homeowner who stays next door) is wonderful to talk to. She made us feel so welcome and our dogs as well. The home itself felt like going to visit my grandparents - lots of history on the walls and a comfortable, cozy living room with dog friendly carpet. Other reviews have said the house smelled musty, we didn't notice that at all (and I have a sensitive nose.) Very peaceful and quiet - lots of room for kids and dogs to roam. I relished in the rare luxury of a beach all to myself on Orcas Island. We will be back!

We love Karemar Cove. This is our fourth visit as a family. Orcas Island has lots of wonderful things to see and do, but a day spent reading on the deck, or watching the view change with the light on the bluff below, or skipping rocks on the beach (a very rare amenity up here)is a day well spent. The kitchen is fully stocked, the sleeping accommodations are comfortable, and the owner is nearby in case of questions.

Very minor suggestions:

1. Sadly, it is time to prune a few of the trees that are beginning to block the view again. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision!

2. If there were one or two small tables on the deck by the very comfortable chairs, I would definitely put my tea on them. The rail is wide enough, but a table would be safer.

We look forward to returning sooner rather than later.

The 50 acre waterfront property was magnificent. A great place to relax and explore: sea stars along the shoreline, the occasional seal, the birds, the forest land around the property. The house had lot of character and was very comfortable, tidy. I am very appreciative of the family who rented this magnificent property out to the public. If it wasn't for the dog smell in the carpet throughout the house, I would want to return again and again. So, I can recommend to my friends with large dogs who want to bring them along. I can't recommend to those without dogs. Thanks to the owners for a beautiful Orcas vacation!

This is a GREAT spot. We had the entire cove to ourselves, like our own private beach! Cabin is terrific with plenty of room for two families with toddlers. My only complaint is that the decor is rather dated and the house has a bit of a musty or mildewy smell to it. The Wi-Fi didn't work on the first day but the owner was terrific and figured out the problem for us within 24 hours. Overall this was a bright sunny location, very quiet, and a delightful place to spend the Fourth of July weekend

We had a terrific time at this property. It's right on the water with great places to explore with our kids. Starfish everywhere, deer, seals, herons and sea otters hanging out in the cove and on the rocks in front of the house. The best part of the day was sitting on the deck with coffee in the morning and a beverage in the evening - enjoying the quiet beautiful scenery, watching the boats and being with our family without the interruption of email and cell phones. The accomodations are not fancy but very well equiped and Joan, the owner, lives right next door and was very nice and helpful.

We really enjoyed our stay at Karemar Cove and would return. The house was homey and inviting (although the beds could be more comfortable and the old carpet should probably be removed / replaced). The private beaches were the best part. The only other suggestion I have is to have kayaks available for renter use.

This was a fun place for my boys and I to stay. It's on the funky side-old furniture and decor. There are some things that don't work well, like sliding glass doors and screen doors, but it was very comfortable and clean. The kitchen was well equipped and there were lots of extras, such as books and games. The view off the deck was the best feature and the house was fairly secluded and on a dirt road. You can walk down to the cove and see the tidepools or take a kayak out if you have one. Very nice get away.

We stayed in the perfect place for our family. Karemar Cove provided the quiet and remote cabin that we desired as well as plenty of beach and forest for our kids (ages 8 & 11)to explore. The scenery was perfection in every way. Doing the dishes by hand was heaven just because of the view out of the kitchen window. The house had everything we needed and I chose it specifically for it's rustic and non-updated style.

Good family setup.

Karemar Cove is a gem on a beautiful island. The views from the property over the sound were fantastic and you can see down to the beach in the cove from the property enabeling the kids to have the freedom to roam. The private cove was just stunning and only a short easy walk down a pretty path. The owner, Joan was welcoming and helpful and made us feel very at home. What the propertly lacked in amenities more than made up for in privacy and second to none location.
